Peter R. Berti, PhD

Deputy Director / Nutrition Advisor

Dr. Berti joined HealthBridge (formerly PATH Canada) in 1998. As Nutrition Advisor he is responsible for ensuring the technical quality of all HealthBridge's work in food and nutrition research and programming. Much of his work has been in the Americas (Ecuador, Bolivia and Brazil) where he has conducted research and managed programmes in food fortification, nutritional assessment, and risk analysis and management, and now his work emphasizes food system research, especially the

integration of food and nutrition interventions with agriculture interventions. He brings to his work a command of data analysis, which enables novel insight into program evaluation, such as the analyses

showing the impact of an integrated nutrition and agriculture intervention in Malawi, the adequacy evaluation of a large scale World Vision intervention, and the widely cited review of nutrition impacts of

agriculture programs.

Current Projects

BOLIVIA: Peter works closely with partners at World Neighbors in Bolivia to improve the health of the rural poor in northern Potosi. This is one of the poorest areas in the world with a harsh climate and difficult farming conditions. Despite the difficulties we see great promise through innovative work to improve the feeding behaviours of young children. Click here or here to learn more about the work and click here to support the work.

ECUADOR: In partnership with the Ecuadorian NGO, EkoRural, Peter is working towards developing a healthier food system in Ecuador. There is work on farms to improve water mangement in arid regions, work with families to make healthier food choices, and work with Canastas Comunitarias (ecological, financial and health motivated food buying co-operatives) to improve access to healthy food choices.

RWANDA: HarvestPlus is in the process of developing an iron-rich variety of bean suitable for use in Rwanda. Peter and HealthBridge Postdoctoral Fellow, Jacqueline Kung'u, are conducting a background study to understand and document the Rwandan food system, particularly with respect to beans, and to conduct a baseline dietary survey.

MOBILE TECHNOLOGY: Over the last two years HealthBridge has gained expertise in conducting large scale health surveys using handheld computers (PDAs), for example see our recent publication. Peter, along with colleague Jim Klass of DevEd Inc, are now developing a on-line course to teach others how to do these surveys. The course is now being pilot tested and will be opened up more broadly in late 2010.
