Fortification Rapid Assessment Tool - FRAT

The Fortification Rapid Assessment Tool (FRAT) was developed based on the realization that our developing country partners needed a tool to help them identify locally appropriate and available ways to fortify foods.

Objectives

The objective of this project was to develop and test generic guidelines for identifying suitable food vehicles (in terms of both market conditions and consumption characteristics) for food fortification

Results

The tests were carried out in Burkina Faso, Bangladesh, and Brazil. The guidelines for characterizing consumption worked well. The original guidelines developed for market characterization were not at all useful and so were redeveloped. While we believe that the revised guidelines will be effective, they have not yet been formally tested.
