Background study on nutrition in Rwanda

Nutritional Studies Relevant to Biofortified Beans Interventions

Introduction

Relatively little is known about the food system of Rwanda or the diet, nutrition and health status of its people.  HarvestPlus has interest in advancing iron-rich beans in Rwanda, but prior to doing so it was necessary to develop an understanding of the Rwandan food system and nutritional needs in Rwanda.

Objectives

To collect data and review the literature on the Rwandan food system.

To conduct a representative survey to assess the diet and nutritional status of the Rwandan population.

Results

Representative random samples of 708 households were drawn from villages in each of the Northern and Southern Provinces.  Demographic, SES and bean cultivation and use data were collected from households; dietary data were collected from 743 women and 674 children and analysed for nutrient intake and adequacy, food sources and quantity of beans in the diet.  Blood samples were taken from 672 women and 577 children and analysed for iron status indicators.

The final report has been drafted but is currently embargoed.  It will be posted in the HealthBridge reports as soon as possible.
